How to get an ENS Domain

Ethereum Naming Service or ENS Domain is a method that securely converts an Ethereum address to text for users to easily remember it. We will discuss how you can acquire this domain to memorize your wallet address.

If you have trouble remembering or pronouncing people’s real names, you give them nicknames instead. This is what an ENS domain accomplishes. ENS is an abbreviation for Ethereum Name Service, which can replace public keys with personalized nicknames.

Let’s look at the technical side of Ethereum Name Service (ENS) to get a detailed understanding of this naming system.

Whenever users want to receive ETH in their wallets, they can use the ENS domain instead of a complicated address. Rather than receiving a payment that looks like "Ox4h42j34298sd68'' in your wallet, you can utilize ENS to purchase names like jerryfolk.eth, which are easier to remember.

The concept of ENS domains is comparable to that of the Domain Name System (DNS), which simplifies most IP addresses on the world wide web by generating human-readable names and easy-to-remember URLs.  ENS essentially employs the same operating process on domains, but it utilizes crypto technology, DeFi.

How can you get one for yourself?

To avoid errors or fake websites, use the following address to access ENS Domains:

Search your custom name (“jerryfolk.eth” for this article) in the upper search bar to see that it hasn't already been registered by somebody else. If it’s already being used, look for an available domain.

  • To purchase, click the name.
  • To connect your wallet, click the "Connect" button on the left tab.

  • You can attach Ethereum-enabled wallets such as Metamask, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, and others such as those shown in the image above.
  • Connect your preferred wallet to the Decentralized Application (DApp). I'll be purchasing this ENS Domain with Metamask.

  • From this page, you can choose the registration period. The DApp will show you the price in Ethereum. For 10 years you can purchase the domain for $22.06 (depending on the gas fee).
  • The registration has three simple steps:
  • Request to Register: you will sign the transaction requesting the transaction.
  • Wait for 1 minute: This waiting period is to avoid any collision purchases and ensure that another person is not buying the same domain.
  • When you click the "register" button, the wallet will prompt you to sign the transaction and pay the registration and gas fees.

You now have a .eth domain to your name. You can use it to send, receive, or store tokens in your Ethereum wallets.

You can now import your same DNS domain name to the ENS name as well, thanks to a recent ENS upgrade. Through this integration, you can use the ENS name in a variety of other applications, including Web 3.0 profiles and Web 3.0 usernames. This will eventually give you complete control over the future of Web 3.0.

It's also worth noting that all ENS domains adhere to the ERC-721 standard. As a result, you will be able to continue using them just as you would an NFT. As a result, you will be able to buy, trade, and sell your ENS.

ENS domains have made crypto wallet payments more accessible and efficient for blockchain enthusiasts and users.  The system's decentralized network also gives the ENS community more freedom and puts control in users’ hands, so this space could be a profitable investment opportunity in the long run. With a few mouse clicks, you can purchase your ENS domain.

Concluding Thoughts:

ENS is a ground-breaking project because it combines fungible and non-fungible properties. As all .eth domain names are using the ERC-721 standard, they can be treated as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).
