Bitcoin Dominance, Countable Basket
Bitcoin's share of the combined market capitalisation of the largest crypto assets we can price from a single auditable source, published as a ceiling rather than an estimate.
Method
Twenty-two assets are priced in a single call to the DefiLlama coins market-capitalisation API. Circulating market capitalisation is summed to give the denominator, and Bitcoin's capitalisation is divided by it to give the share.
The same twenty-two assets are used on every run, so a change between runs is a change in the market and not a change in the basket. The Herfindahl-Hirschman index is the sum of squared percentage shares across the basket; it runs from near zero to 10,000, and two equal holders would score 5,000.
A second, wider figure for the whole market is taken from the CoinageReport ticker endpoint on the same day, and both are reported, because the gap between them is the point of the measurement.
What this does not show
It does not show the tail. The twenty-two assets were chosen because we already knew they were large, and no free endpoint ranks the whole market by capitalisation and shows its working. That biases the result in one direction only: adding assets can only grow the denominator, so this is a ceiling on Bitcoin's true share rather than an estimate of it.
It does not show what any of this is worth. Market capitalisation multiplies last traded price by circulating supply, and circulating supply is self-reported for most tokens outside the top handful. Concentration measured this way describes the accounting shape of the market, not its depth.
The concentration index here is computed over twenty-two assets on a single day. It is not comparable with the mining-pool index in this collection, which is computed over a different population and a different window, and the two should not be read against each other.
