On-Chain Venues Handled 16.4% of Spot Volume — and That Is a Floor
On-chain venues handled 16.4% of spot volume on the day we measured. Because a third of centralized exchanges do not report, that share is a floor rather than an estimate.
Decentralized exchanges settled $6.53 billion of spot volume in twenty-four hours on 4 August 2026.1 Centralized venues reported $33.32 billion over the same window.2 That puts on-chain trading at 16.4% of the combined total.
Treat that as a floor rather than an estimate, and the reason is the denominator. On-chain volume is settled on a public ledger and can be recounted by anyone who disagrees with it. Centralized volume is a figure an exchange publishes about itself, and as we set out in the companion piece to this one, the ranking that dataset produces is not credible. Comparing a measured quantity against a self-reported one biases the resulting ratio downward. The true on-chain share is 16.4% or higher, and we cannot tell you how much higher.
The trend is the weaker part of the story
Over thirty days, on-chain venues handled $195.2 billion, down 4.4% against the preceding thirty days1. So the honest summary is that on-chain trading holds a substantial and probably understated share of spot activity, and that share is not currently growing. Those two things are usually reported separately, by people who prefer one of them.
The activity is also spread thin. DefiLlama tracks 1,289 DEX protocols across 287 chains to arrive at that $6.53 billion, which is an average of roughly $5 million per protocol per day. The aggregate is meaningful. Almost none of the individual venues inside it are.
What this does not show
The two sides are not measured the same way. On-chain figures can double-count where aggregators and routers pass an order through more than one pool, which inflates the numerator. Centralized figures are unverifiable, which inflates the denominator. These errors push in opposite directions and we cannot net them off. A single twenty-four hour window is also volatile: on-chain volume moved 13.0% in the last day alone, which is why the thirty-day figure is the one to hold onto.
Nothing here addresses derivatives, which are larger than spot on most venues and measured even less consistently. This is a spot comparison only, and it should not be read as a statement about where crypto trading happens overall.
Next measurement: 1 November 2026, same endpoints, same basis.
