Founder of FTX Sam Bankman-Fried is hit with new criminal charges on Thursday as he gave illegal political donations totaling tens of millions of dollars.
Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of the FTX digital asset exchange, was charged today with new crimes in connection with political donations he made.
The ex-FTX boss allegedly made more than 300 unauthorized political donations in the US to "try to buy influence over cryptocurrency regulation in Washington, D.C.," according to a superseding indictment released on Thursday.
Sam Bankman-Fried hit with illegal crypto donation charges
FTX, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, collapsed last November allegedly because Bankman-Fried and others criminally mismanaged the company by mixing funds and placing risky bets with customer money on its sister trading platform, Alameda Research.
According to a news detail published on Thursday, Bankman-Fried "accessed and stole FTX customer deposits without detection."
Sam Bankman-Fried is accused of participating in an unlawful effort to in๏ฌuence politics by giving tens of millions of dollars to both Democrats and Republicans.
The former Jane Street trader and MIT graduate is now facing a total of 12 criminal counts, according to the prosecution. The new allegations include conspiring to defraud FTX customers regarding the purchase and sale of derivatives, conspiring to run an unlicensed money transmission business, conspiring to defraud Alameda Research's lenders via wire fraud, and conspiring to make illegal political contributions and defraud the FEC.
The Southern District of New York US Attorney's Office's Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit arrested Sam Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, in December and initially accused him of eight financial criminal offenses.
Last month, Bankman-Fried entered a not-guilty plea to all of the criminal accusations, including conspiracy to commit money laundering and wire fraud. The date for his trial has been set for October.
Customers could buy, sell, and bet on the price of cryptocurrencies on FTX. The Miami Heat arena's naming rights belonged to the company because of its fame.
SBF was also well-liked by the establishment because he gave millions of dollars to candidates, including President Joe Biden, and invited politicians to fancy business conferences in the Caribbean.
Now, some politicians are returning those donations. The White House has not yet commented on the donations made by SBF.
Conclusion
Since FTX abruptly declared bankruptcy in November, Bankman-Fried and his inner circle have been at the center of controversy.
After the allegations of illegal political donations, earlier this month, a group of FTX entities attempting to recover contributions made by SBF and others announced they would do so by "sending private communications to political figures, political action groups, or other recipients of contributions or other payments made by or on behalf of the FTX Debtors, Samuel Bankman-Fried, or other officers or principals of the FTX Debtors" in order to request the money be returned.
Bankman-Fried has said that he did not commit any criminal acts and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Currently, he is living with his parents while waiting for his trial. In interviews, he has admitted to making major mistakes and not knowing about certain things.
Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda, and Gary Wang, a former executive at FTX, both pleaded guilty to fraud-related charges and agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
