Solana’s Speed Advantage, Measured: 10 Turns of Its Capital a Month

Solana holds about a ninth of Ethereum’s locked capital and settles nearly twice its DEX volume. Turnover, not transactions per second, is the measure that means something.

Solana’s pitch has always been throughput, and throughput is almost always quoted as transactions per second — a number that describes what a chain could do, not what it does. There is a better measure sitting in public data, and it is more flattering to Solana than the marketing figure. Solana holds $4.77 billion of total value locked against Ethereum’s $40.76 billion — about a ninth — and yet it settled $49.54 billion of decentralized exchange volume over the last thirty days against Ethereum’s $28.55 billion.12 All figures pulled 3 August 2026.

Put those together and you get capital turnover. Every dollar parked on Solana traded 10.4 times in thirty days. Every dollar on Ethereum traded 0.70 times. That is a factor of roughly fifteen, and it is the concrete thing “speed” buys: not a bigger balance sheet, a faster one.

Why the ratio is the interesting number

Transactions per second is a ceiling, and ceilings are cheap to advertise. Turnover is realized behavior. Low fees and sub-second confirmation change which trades are worth making at all: strategies that need to touch the chain twenty times a day are economic at a fraction of a cent and absurd at several dollars. Solana’s share of all on-chain spot volume is 25.5% over thirty days, on 6.4% of all chain TVL. Those two percentages not matching is the entire story.

The honest comparison is not Solana against Ethereum alone. Ethereum’s activity has moved to its rollups, and counting the base layer by itself is a strawman. Adding Base and Arbitrum gives the Ethereum side $54.86 billion of thirty-day volume on $46.52 billion of TVL — turnover of 1.18, against Solana’s 10.4. Still a gap near ninefold, but ninefold is the defensible figure and fifteen is not. Solana is also not alone: BNB Chain turns over 6.6 times on $4.89 billion of TVL.

  • Solana — TVL $4.77bn — 30d DEX volume $49.54bn — turnover 10.4×
  • BNB Chain — $4.89bn — $32.07bn — 6.6×
  • Base — $4.57bn — $21.85bn — 4.8×
  • Arbitrum — $1.19bn — $4.46bn — 3.7×
  • Ethereum — $40.76bn — $28.55bn — 0.70×

What this does not show

Volume is not economic activity. A large and unquantified share of Solana’s DEX throughput is arbitrage and market-making bots recycling the same inventory, and cheap blockspace is exactly the condition that makes that recycling profitable. The mechanism that produces the impressive ratio is also the mechanism that inflates it. We cannot separate the two from this data, and neither can anyone quoting the headline number at you.

Turnover also says nothing about what most users care about. It does not measure reliability, and Solana has a documented history of outages that a volume series will never surface. It does not measure the cost or finality of a transfer for an ordinary user, only that the aggregate happened. TVL and DEX volume come from different DefiLlama series with different coverage of the long tail of protocols, so the ratio is an approximation, not an accounting identity.

We will re-run these five chains on 3 November 2026 using the same two endpoints. The claim we would want to falsify is the durable one: that Solana’s turnover advantage survives a period when arbitrage is less profitable.
