Altcoin is short for alternative coin, a catch-all term for every cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. Since Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, everything that came afterward was defined in relation to it, even though many altcoins now have little in common with Bitcoin beyond running on similar underlying blockchain technology. Thousands of altcoins exist today, ranging from serious infrastructure projects to speculative tokens with no real purpose at all.

Ethereum is the best known altcoin and arguably the second most important cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, largely because it introduced smart contracts and became the foundation for much of DeFi and NFTs. Other altcoins focus on different priorities entirely, such as faster and cheaper transactions, stronger privacy protections, or specialized use in specific industries like supply chains or gaming.

Not all altcoins are created with the same seriousness of purpose. Some are backed by real development teams solving genuine technical problems, while others are launched primarily to capture short-term hype and speculative trading interest. Meme coins sit at the far end of that spectrum, often having no stated utility beyond community enthusiasm and the possibility of quick price gains.

Stablecoins are technically altcoins too, even though they behave very differently from most of the market. Rather than aiming for price appreciation, stablecoins try to hold a steady value, usually pegged to the U.S. dollar, which makes them useful as a medium of exchange or a place to park funds between trades without leaving the crypto ecosystem entirely.

Because the altcoin category is so broad, it is not especially useful as an investment thesis on its own. Two coins can both be labeled altcoins while having nothing else in common: different technology, different goals, different levels of adoption, and wildly different risk profiles. Evaluating any individual altcoin means looking past the label and examining what the project actually does, who is building it, and whether real demand exists for it.
