Bitcoin and Ethereum Today: Markets Stay Cautious Near $64,600 and $1,875 Ahead of the Fed
Bitcoin and Ethereum held steady on July 20 as a fearful market, thin Bitcoin ETF inflows, and looming Fed and geopolitical headlines kept traders on edge.
Bitcoin and Ethereum were little changed on July 20, holding near $64,600 and $1,875 respectively, as a market still gripped by fear digested a mix of thin ETF demand, cooling geopolitical risk, and a Federal Reserve meeting on the calendar for month's end.
Prices Slip Even as Stocks Rise
Crypto prices drifted lower even as U.S. stock index futures pushed higher, an unusual split that traders attributed to a Crypto Fear and Greed Index still sitting solidly in "fear" territory. Bitcoin has been stuck near the $64,000 level for several sessions, a level it slipped back to after briefly touching $65,000 earlier in the week on a soft inflation print.
Ether has been the more volatile of the two lately. During the market's risk-off leg earlier in the week, ether fell roughly twice as hard as bitcoin on a percentage basis, even though it had been the only major holding a weekly gain going into that stretch.
ETF Flows Are Positive, but Barely
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have pulled in about $273 million in new money over the past two weeks, a swing back to positive territory after a rough stretch of outflows. Traders describe the inflows as "peanuts" relative to the size of the prior exodus, and it would take a run of much stronger weeks to meaningfully change the market's overall positioning.
Geopolitics and the Fed Loom Large
Some of the pressure earlier in the week traced back to a fresh U.S. strike tied to Iran and renewed friction in U.S.-China relations, both of which pushed bitcoin under $63,000 at one point. That risk has eased somewhat: reports of a possible Iran deal sent oil prices lower and gave crypto and stocks a lift. Oil, notably, still touched a one-month high, a reminder that the geopolitical backdrop remains unsettled.
Separately, a wave of selling in AI-related stocks, tied in part to competition from Chinese AI models, has been spilling over into crypto sentiment, adding another layer of caution to an already jumpy market.
Looking further out, options markets are showing some optimism: large bitcoin call spreads have been placed targeting $72,000 by the end of the month, timed to coincide with the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting. A rate decision from the European Central Bank is also on deck this week, adding to a busy macro calendar traders will be watching closely.
The Bottom Line
For now, both bitcoin and ether are treading water rather than trending in either direction. With a fearful market, thin but improving ETF demand, and a stacked calendar of Fed and central bank decisions ahead, traders appear content to wait for a clearer catalyst before committing to a direction.
